Casa Branca, Montemor-o-Novo, 14/09 — 04/10/2026Estava fascinada pela obra de Liliana Porter, nomeadamente,  The Great Burden (1995). Tomei-a como ponto de partida plástico. O urso e a pedra — o peso, burden, carga.

       /
o chapéu        /        o cobre
       /
a pessoa        /        o cântaro
       /
subsolo           /        subsolo

(en) I was fascinated by the work of Liliana Porter, namely, The Great Burden (1995). I took it as a plastic starting point. The bear and the stone — the weight, burden, load.

The first exercise, quite uncommitted, was to use a drawing of one of the dining-room chairs of the place where I have been staying. I knew that, in a way, it would associate itself with an intermediate force between the floor and something else. And so, as soon as I arrive at the atelier, I see a chair with blankets and towels on top — perhaps a weight, or just a mere association between things on top of other things.

After a workshop (or what Daniel Pinheiro called a thing*) on the practice of dowsing, I was, of course, dazzled by the forces and the crossings of the copper wires in "L".

Whenever I tried using the copper wires I felt a slight involuntary traction.

I knew I wanted to work with things — I brought with me the book As pessoas das coisas, by Rui de Almeida Paiva.

I went about gathering objects I found in Casa Branca, between the atelier and the school where I am staying, photographing them one by one. A feather, a small sculpture of a donkey, a piece of cork, a wrench, a stalk of lemon grass, a cast-iron object which I believe is for holding umbrellas, a pitcher and the copper wires shaped in "L".

With these last two objects, in a ready-made logic, I tested some positions, relating the pitcher to water/depth/density and the copper as an interface between space and what is hidden.

By intuition, and to uncommit the thing, I decided to make gnome hats.

I realised there is an evident connotation of load:

the sky                 /         the sky
             /
the hat                /        the copper
           /
the subject        /        the pitcher
           /
the underground    /   the underground

I also realised there may be a triangular association between the underground, the place-now and the sky.

All these configurations propose a structurally gravitational reluctance.

Interessam-me as coisas e as suas proporções voláteis.

I am interested in a predominantly vivid approach: one that is close (not necessarily to the physical location itself, but) to what the Place can represent—a relational configuration between the Place as image and the Place as reality.
